AARP Tax-Aide Program Seeks Volunteers for Next Year’s Income Tax Season

By James Mosner

AARP Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is seeking new volunteers to add to its group of volunteer tax preparers. Volunteer tax preparers help taxpayers who are seeking assistance preparing and filing their income tax returns. New volunteers will join existing teams to help seniors, low income, disabled and otherwise disadvantaged taxpayers at sites around the Twin Cities metro area. Volunteers will learn new skills while giving back to countless communities.

Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or a retiree to participate, nor is experience with accounting or tax preparation necessary. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers receive free tax training and reference materials; are provided laptops and IRS approved software during the tax preparation season; and are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses.

Besides tax preparer volunteers, a limited number of volunteers to serve as greeters/facilitators for organizing the clients’ documents are needed.

The local AARP Tax-Aide volunteer group is particularly in need of volunteers who are bilingual in English and another language to help support the increasing number of taxpayers for which English is not their primary language.

In the Twin Cities metro area, the AARP Tax-Aide Southeast Metro District includes 9 sites in the Saint Paul, West St Paul, South St Paul, and Woodbury area. Last year in the Southeast Metro District, more than 60 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers helped over 3,700 taxpayers. They join the more than 35,000 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers across the country, helping hundreds of thousands of taxpayers each year. New volunteers will be assigned to a tax preparation site(s) within reasonable proximity of their residence.
