HCPA Warriors Hoopsters Prepare For Upcoming Season
The Hmong College Prep Academy Boys' Basketball Team recently opened their 2016-17 season in fine fashion with wins against Groves Academy and Metro Schools College Prep.

This year's squad is coached by the father-son team of James and Zach Cave with Service Learning instructor Brent Ness serving in the JV coaching spot.

"The way the conference has expanded and been restructured has provided us with a great opportunity," stated Coach Ness. "If we play up to our potential, we have a good chance of making a run at a division championship."

The Warriors opened the season with two wins, defeating Groves Academy 78-43 and Metro Schools College Prep 58-11. "The Groves Academy win was especially nice...they soundly beat us last year," stated Coach Ness.

The Warriors have 20 players split between varsity and JV teams and they've also scheduled a handful of C-team games. "We want to ensure that each player gets a chance to see the court," added Coach Ness.

The coaching staff is looking to Chi Nou Vang to lead the club's campaign this year. Vang led all scorers against Groves Academy with 26 points, including four three-pointers. He also had 27 points versus Metro Schools College Prep. A four-year starter, Vang has worked hard to get better each season. "Chi Nou has really matured since his freshman year," stated Coach Ness. "We're hoping he continues to progress throughout the season and perhaps get some looks from a few local college basketball programs."

It's been a tough few years for the Warriors and wins have not come easy. "Our team plays with a lot of character," added Coach Ness. "They've had a rough few years trying to put W's in the win column. However, I feel they're excited for this year and now that they have the taste of success, they hopefully may become a force in our division of the conference."

The Warriors are off for the holidays until Friday, January 13th when they host Chesterton Academy. Tip-off will be at 6:30. Prior to the boys' game, the Lady Warriors will take to the court at 4:30 as they host the Chesterton Academy girls' team as a part of the second annual Cancer Shootout on behalf of the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund. Both games will feature halftime entertainment, raffles, concessions and a silent auction.
