Harness Racing At Running Aces

By Jing Zhang

It was definitely a lovely Saturday at Running Aces Casino and Racetrack with friends at the harness racing opening day. There was great food, beverages and betting on horses with money on the line that entertained us throughout the entire evening.

The event started with an exciting skydive performance and we were lucky enough to appreciate it before the weather became cloudy.

Harness racing is a very unique horse racing sport. I learned that the horses are conducted to run in two different style "gaits" - trotting and pacing. A trotter moves its legs forward in diagonal pairs (right front and left hind), while a pacer moves its legs laterally (right front and right hind together). About seventy percent of horses are pacers.

We watched all nine races they had scheduled for the night. After losing the first two races, I proposed to the group to bet together - everyone put in $5 and we picked a horse together. Luckily, we won two races in a row and the money pot grew quickly from $30 to $108! We couldn't wait to spend our money. We ordered drinks and food at Trout Air Tavern, which has super delicious desserts and fresh fish entries. We even placed some more bets while at the table. Although we lost the next few races, we still had a lot of fun! After the dinner, we headed home satisfied.
