Women's Life Care Center

By Amy Doeun

The Women's Life Care Center of Little Canada has had a long history of helping women through one of the most life changing experiences - giving birth and becoming parents. Hmong Times spoke with Jacinta Lagasse, Community Outreach Advocate for the Center.

The center has been around for 30 years and at its current location for the last 10. Lagasse says, "Over the past few years we have been a referral source for people in the Hmong community and other refugee groups. We are becoming the go to source for parenting education and baby essentials." Many of their clients come to them as referrals from other organizations.

The majority of their clients are between the ages of 18-30 and Lagasse says, "There is a 50/50 mix of first time parents and those that have parented before."

The center offers classes and resources for women on their parenting journey. The first type of class is Learn and Earn. During this one on one class scheduled during regular office hours at the center, clients meet with an advocate. They discuss everything from prenatal health, to what to expect when the baby comes. There are also videos and worksheets. Each session runs for three hours, and there are eight sessions.

Clients may also choose the Well Life life coach option. Through working with a life coach they learn not only about the basics of baby care but chart their aspirations, how will they balance the demands of a baby and continue to be fulfilled as individuals.

There are also group classes that meet mornings and evenings twice a month. About eight mothers attend the classes. "We talk about different life skills and maternal wellness topics," said Lagasse. Recent topics included; post partum depression awareness, shopping smart, cooking healthy, baby bonding, fitness, goal setting and budgeting. Each class is taught by a specialized teacher.

The Learn and Earn class also provides baby supplies. "Once they have completed the class they get everything they need to start out life with baby, a clothing layette with different sizes, toiletry kit, bathtub, pack and play, car seat, health care kit, Dreft laundry soap, blankets and diapers. After the class they can come in once a month for diapers," said Lagasse.

Lagasse summed up the goal of the center, "We welcome women who are excited to learn about their babies and changes in their life. We welcome them to come in and learn about our educational programs and receive support. We have an open door." They serve the Little Canada and St. Paul area.
