Freedom Celebration

By Amy Doeun

On July 1st and 2nd thousands of people gathered at McMurray Fields near Como Park to celebrate the freedom that comes from living in the U.S. But as Mee Vang, one of the Board of Trustees for Lao Family Foundation said it is not just about "A celebration of our independence but also a celebration of Hmong heritage." As the board made plans for the new celebration they wanted to focus on family, Hmong heritage, and community."

Vang went on to say that many of the changes to the celebration this year were well received. "We have a growing number of players in the ping pong tournament." While the children and family area was well received their area was as Vang mentioned, "A little bit further and not enough advertisement." Vang hopes that this portion of the celebration will continue to grow.

By far the best feedback received according to Vang was from the food vendors and consumers, "Our food court got really good feedback. We moved it from up on the hill to down on a flat area. The merchants and vendors both gave really good feedback. It seemed like everyone was really happy with it. They felt like they were equal partners."

The festival also provided two large tents, a dining area for families and friends to gather and eat. Vang recalled that "This was a very popular spot throughout the festival."

The focus was on families and community coming together. Towards this goal the board decided to move to a singular entertainment stage so that it could be more widely viewed. Vang said that moving to one stage seemed to accomplish this goal.

Vang continued, "We want to thank everyone who came out to celebrate. We have a big appreciation for the people who came out." Plans are already underway to continue on the improvements for next year.
